Vegan Hotspots in The Hunter

As the guide has expanded we wanted an opportunity to highlight some of our favourite vegan, vegetarian and strongly vegetarian friendly businesses across the Hunter, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast regions! To qualify for this section of the website these businesses must be 100% vegan or vegetarian, or have a dedicated vegan menu. Check out the links below and use the top or drop down menus to find the full guide to your area.

Bonta Vera

Bonta Vera was the first plant based restaurant to hit The Hunter Region this century! Known for recreating classic burgers, sweet desserts and cafe favourites Bonta is the go-to spot for comfort food that won't cost the earth. Eat in the historic court house dining room setting, takeaway when you're in a rush or grab a picnic basket to enjoy a sunny day in the gorgeous gardens.

Sephardim

This Mediterranean Restaurant at Warners Bay not only has a vegan menu, but they also offer a vegan banquet and have been cataloguing their vegan friendly wines and beers as well! Their food is rich, tasty and loaded with surprises. 

The Bhakti Tree

Wholesome Hari Krishna food in the heart of Mayfield. Bhakti Tree is all all vegetarian restaurant that espouses Hari Krishna principles. You can head along to a cheap dinner with chanting or yoga on weeknights, or check out their cafe operation on the weekends. 

Pickled & Pressed

Pickled & Pressed is a plant based cafe in The Junction with a strong focus on creating food that is whole, healthy and delicious. They are working towards creating a 100% waste free environment with the aim of making everything possible in house. Head in to the cafe to check out a great range of savoury and sweet options at breakfast and lunch.

MamaP

Mama P at Charlestown is a vegetarian cafe that focusses on healthful, nutrient dense foods with a focus on amazing raw and gluten free options. Whole cakes are available to pick up or made to order, there are sweet and savoury breakfast options aplenty and the waffles with nicecream are a treat not to be missed. 

Harry's Pizza

This takeaway favourite is held in such high esteem in Newcastle not only for their awesome vegan pizza menu, with over 16 options, but also because of the vegan dessert options, house made garlic bread and fantastic customer service.

Seed Cafe

Upon re-opening the cafe doors in 2016 Seed Cafe went all veg! Their menu boasts a great selection of vegan options at breakfast and lunch. Buckwheat pancakes and tofu scramble at breakfast are favourites and the laksa or middle eastern plate are hard to beat at lunch time.

Nina's IGA

Nina's IGA is an institution on Beaumont Street in Hamilton. Recently they have become a vegan mecca in Newcastle, stocking a huge array of vegan alternative products that vegans and the wider community are embracing. In addition to this they have made shopping a breeze for vegans, all vegan friendly products are marked with a special green label. No more label reading for vegans at this supermarket!

Natural Tucker

Apart from a meat pie in the cabinet Natural Tucker offers up all vegetarian fare on Darby Street, with a great selection of wraps and burgers, sweet treats and pastries. Staff are really great at helping to veganise the veg options.
