Momo Newcastle, 227-229 Hunter Street, Newcastle. Open Tuesday-Sunday 7:30am-3pm
Momo Newcastle rocked on to the Newcastle cafe scene on the back of their success at their Organic Feast location in East Maitland. They've got a great selection of creative, fresh and whole food vegan options on their menu and changing specials board at both breakfast and lunch. On this visit we were craving some afternoon tea, and we were not disappointed! Next time you're craving something sweet consider popping into Momo Newcastle for a great selection of coffees, turmeric lattes and some sweet treats to boot. They have both baked and raw options, and the vegan items are clearly marked. Whether you're a true sweet tooth, chocaholic, or like your desserts to tone back the sugar you'll find something to love at Momo.
We suggest taking a few friends and splitting a number of their options so you can discover your new favourite!
The chocolate and raspberry cake is a vegan favourite in Newcastle, when Momo opened up it was just about the only place in town where you get get a vegan slice of cake, and it has stayed a favourite because this cake is just about perfect. Momo have been very judicious with the sugar, the cake lets the cocoa shine through, and is peppered with raspberry flavour to add little pops of brightness. Cakes are baked fresh regularly, and not heavily refrigerated, so the cake remains light and fresh.
Momo is laid out beautifully with a mix of large and smaller tables, lots of light streaming in from their large windows and plenty of greenery around the room. You'll even find a small boutique grocery selection off to the side with some beautiful oils, vinegars, preserves, chocolates and more.
The chocolate mint ganache was the pick of the day. This raw treat had a decadent, mousse texture and held together beautifully when cut. The ganache was sumptuous and flavourful, and passed the omnivore test completely. We loved that Momo eshew the classic dollop of cream on the dessert plate for this little fruit pairing. It worked well as a palette cleanser!
Momo stock these little beauties, raw chocolates made by Loco Love, in a selection of flavours. We picked the pistachio and ginger filled chocolate with a blue cornflower decoration. The filling was rich with a little ginger spice, and paired beautifully with the chocolate. We have previously tried the salted caramel crisp, matcha mint cream and coconut flavours and can recommend all of them. These little treats come in at $4 a pop, but are so rich and loaded with nutrient dense foods that they'll be all you need for a chocolate hit.
