Over the Moo Ice Cream recently launched a bevy of new flavours, and, in the name of science, we just had to review them. We were already in love with the classic range of flavours, with Espresso Lane being the clear favourite in our house. Their range has now doubled in the selection of flavours and we couldn't be more excited!
Their awesome range of vegan ice creams come with choices for the lovers of Western classic flavours, and choices for those who love flavours found in classic Asian desserts. Favourite tastes from the entire Asia Pacific come together in this delicious range of ice creams!
All the desserts made by Over the Moo are made on coconut milk and in the style of Italian gelato, making their ice cream rich, creamy and completely delicious.
Now, on to the new flavours!
Me! Me! Black Sesame!
In the pre vegan days my sister and I would love visiting Chinatown in Sydney. After stuffing ourselves silly with dumplings, or ramen or whatever else took our fancy in the Dixon Street food hall we'd love to get black sesame fish ice creams. We'd stuff those fish shaped wafter biscuits filled with creamy, nutty black sesame ice cream into stomachs already thoroughly stretched by our dinners and waddle back up to Central Station to go home.
For us the Me! Me! Black Sesame! flavour is a complete nostalgia blast! The ice cream is rich and creamy, without being too heavy. The black sesame flavour is nutty, with a slight bitter complexity, meaning this ice cream isn't too sweet for my savoury loving palette. I can't wait to get my hands on some good wafers to make ice cream sandwiches with this delicious treat!
I Fell For Caramel
I Fell For Caramel has to be the most aptly named ice cream Over the Moo has brought out yet. I fell, and I fell hard. Hokey Pokey was the Peters Ice Cream flavour I always wished I'd selected when I was a kid and someone would let me have a taste of theirs. Those little bites of toffee were just the perfect accompaniment to perfectly creamy vanilla ice cream.
With this new flavour Over the Moo have improved the classic Hokey Pokey by bulking out those crispy toffee pieces and doubling the caramel flavour by making the ice cream base caramel too. This ice cream is a pure explosion of childhood ice cream happiness. It's like every caramel flavoured thing you ever loved, rainbow paddle pops, jersey caramels, caramel milkshakes, those hard caramels Pop always had...
We all totally fell for Over the Moo's caramel.
Pandan Pecan Party
If you haven't heard of pandan before it's an edible plant that is used widely in South Asian cooking to give a fragrance to sweet dishes in particular, and often added to rice as well. Pandan is the reason many Asian desserts are coloured with a glorious bright green and the reason this delicious ice cream flavour is a gorgeous pastel green colour.
Pecans are my favourite, and most underused nut. These sweet little nuts are so flavourful, probably because they're very high in monounsaturated fats, delicious monounsaturated fats. This flavour was, just like the others, delicious! But it also took more tastes to come around to, pandan is not a common flavour in our house. The buttery pecan flavour balances well with the light, fragrant pandan. Out of the three flavours we tried this is the one I'd choose to eat on a really hot day due to the refreshing fragrance of the pandan flavour.
The flavours in the range include:
- Vanilla Bean Missing You
- The Espresso Lane
- Choc! Choc! Who's There?
- I Fell for Caramel
- Pandan Pecan Party!
- Me! Me! Black Sesame!
- Matcha Made in Heaven
- Ginger Ninja Karate Choc!
