Nina's IGA on Beaumont Street is your one stop shop for mezze plate heaven. Nina's has been operating on Beaumont Street for some 28 years and does an amazing job of catering to the needs of locals and supporting local producers.
There is a wonderful article on the Hidden Hamilton blog which tells the story of this supermarket's beginnings just beautifully, bookmark it for a lovely afternoon read.
Now onto the food!
Nina's stocks all of your standard supermarket needs, but where it really shines is in the speciality products and locally made products that exemplify the owners own Greek heritage and the varied ethnic communities who make up Hamilton. There are dried pulses and pastas, huge jars containing all manner of pickled vegetables, tins of dolmades and tubs of tahini to last any vegan quite some time.
Nina's IGA is my favourite place to load up on goodies to fill a respectable mezze plate with. There are huge marinated artichoke hunks, a plethora of olives to choose from, jars of every kind of ajvar you could want (eggplant is my favourite!) roasted red capsicums and some hummus that is as close to homemade as I've ever found in a store.
And who could forget about dessert? These almond rolls are decadent perfection. Crushed almonds, wrapped in crisp filo pastry and doused in sugar syrup. These little rolls are so rich they're made to be shared.
