Hunter Valley Vegan Dining Options

Maitland

Bollywood Indian Cuisine $$ - 15 Mitchell Drive, East Maitland. There are plenty of tasty vegan curries and delicious appetizers, staff are always happy to confirm which menu items are vegan for you. 

Chinh's Cuisine $ - Fresh and tasty Vietnamese food and coconut water stright from the coconut. Staff here are always happy to accomodate vegan requests, skip the dipping sauce for the spring rolls as there is fish sauce in it. 

Favourite Chair Cafe $ - Maitland Mall, High Street, Maitland. This little cafe is adorable and always has a vegan option on the menu, and sometimes vegan specials. 

Hunter River Hotel $$ - 10 Melbourne Street, East Maitland. Grab a Veg Out pizza without cheese for a vegan lunch or dinner at the Hunter River Hotel. 

King Bill IV $$ - Maitland. Restaurant in Maitland serving fine food and craft beers. For breakfast grab some toast and add some vegan sides, at lunch and dinner there's a dish of warmed olives, and the tree hugger pizza, ask for it without cheese. Open from breakfast til late. 

Lupita $$ - Maitland. This Latin restaurant has plenty of vegetarian options that the staff are happy to make vegan on request. Stop in for a burrito, empanadas, yuka chips and more! 

Mayeena Thai $ - 473 High Street, Maitland. This Thai restaurant has plenty of plant based options on their menu, just check with staff which options can be made without fish sauce, shrimp paste or oyster sauce. Open for lunch on Fridays and dinner Tuesday - Sunday. 

Momo Whole Food Cafe $$ - Hunter Street, Newcastle and East Maitland. This cafe is attached to Organic Feast grocery store at East Maitland and located in the old KFC building in town. There are great vegan options on the seasonal menu and usually a vegan special, fresh salads in the case with a selection of vegan and raw treats as well. Open for breakfast and lunch. 

Mustafa's Kebab House and Cafe $ - High Street, Maitland. This kebab shop will whip you up a super tasty kebab. The owners are friendly and helpful, the felafels are not to oil or dry, and the baba ganouj is home made and delicious. There are heaps of toppings to choose from, including the more unusual carrot, beetroot, pickles, olives, mushrooms and dolmades. You can also grab roasted nuts and dolmades for a snack. There are some tubs of non-dairy ice cream and sweets, but we have yet to confirm whether these are vegan friendly. 

Wider Hunter Valley

Amanda's at the Edge $$ - Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. Amanda's has a separate vegetarian menu with plenty of vegan options to choose from. 

Bistro Vinden $$$ - Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. Bistro Vinden is located on the scenic Vinden estate and they have a separate vegetarian menu with some vegan items. 

Bonta Vera $ - Church Street, Minmi. Bonta Vera is the first 100% vegan restaurant to open up in The Hunter in 2016, Bonta serves up decadent breakfasts including pancakes and their favourite Bonta burger. At lunch grab a burger and chips, milkshakes and don't leave without cheesecake. Open for breakfast and lunch, Thursday - Sunday. 

Grinders Espresso Bar - Cessnock. This cafe in Cessnock stocks MamaP's raw vegan treats and has a few vegetarian options on the menu, chat to staff about what can be altered to be made vegan. 

JERF Just Eat Real Food $$ - Lorn, Hunter Valley. This cafe serves up wholefood vegan breakfast and lunch options as well as desserts, fresh juices and kombucha. 

Mr O Kitchen Espresso Grocer $$ - Cessnock, Hunter Valley. Mr O specialises in special diets with plenty of options for vegan, celiac and clean eating customers. Sweet toothed diners won't be able to resist their raw and sugar free cakes made in house or acai bowls for something more substantial. For savoury lovers there are cafe classic salad bowls, sandwhiches, buddah bowls and healthy bruschetta options. For drinks they offer superfood smoothies, in house cold pressed juices and cold pressed almond and coconut milks for coffees, cold drinks as well as matcha and turmeric lattes. Open Monday - Friday 6:30am - 3pm. 

Muse Restaurant $$$ - Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. This modern Australian fine dining restaurant has a focus on fantastic produce that is seasonal and local, which is more than likely a contributing factor towards the fantastic vegan options. Make a booking for a special events with staff and let them know you're vegan and expect the best meal of your life! 

Muse Kitchen $$$ - Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. This restaurant is the sister to Muse Restaurant. You won't find anything vegan on the menu but give them a little notice and these skilled chefs will prepare a divine meal for you. Open for lunch Wednesday - Sunday and Dinner on Saturday. 

Nanna Kerr's $$$ - Rothbury, Hunter Valley. This beautiful location has plenty of vegan options to choose from. At breakfast check out the vegan board, egg free veggie benedict, chia pudding or toast with condiments. Oishii Japanese Cuisine $$ - Tempus Two Winery, Hunter Valley. Oishii has a selection of Japanese and Thai items on the menu. Chat to staff about which dishes they can make vegan for you. They can make a special sushi roll, teriyaki tofu dish, a couple of the entrees or alter a couple of the Thai dishes. 

The Railway Hotel $$ - Cessnock. This pub doesn't have anything vegan on the menu, but the chef is very accommodating and will put something delicious together for you. 

Worn Out Wares $$ - George Street, Singleton. Staff here are wonderfully helpful and there is always one or two vegan items on the menu as well as a fruit smoothie of the day and fresh juices. At breakfast the fruit board is a gorgeous option and staff can help you seek out a vegan sweet for morning or afternoon tea as well.
